Wilma Stockenström is one of the most important authors in Afrikaans. She has published 5 novels, 7 collections of poems and one drama. She received the Hertzog Prize for poetry in 1977 for Van vergetelheid en van glans and again in 1992 for her novel Abjater wat so lag.
Her best-known novel, however, is The Journey to the Baobab Tree (1981). The translation by J.M. Coetzee, published by Faber & Faber, has led to this novel being translated into quite a number of other languages. For the Italian edition she received the Grinzane Cavour Prize in 1988. She has also had a successful career as an actress on stage and in film.
She has been living in Cape Town since 1993.
