Cornelius (Kerneels) Tobias Breytenbach was born on 13 April 1952 in Johannesburg.
He matriculated from Alberton High School. In 1975 he completed his Masters Degree in Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Stellenbosch. He then worked as a journalist at, among others, the daily newspaper Beeld, and later as the Arts Editor for Die Burger. He was also a pop music columnist and also wrote restaurant reviews for magazines such as Huisgenoot, De Kat and Insig. After that, he was a publisher at Human & Rousseau for quite some time. .
Kerneels made his writing debut in 1992 with Morsdood van die honger, a collection of short stories. This was followed in 1993 with the novel Glimlag. He was awarded the CNA Debut Prize for Morsdood van die honger. He published a cook book, Die lekkerste lekker, in 2005. This was followed by Die ding tussen man en vrou in 2009.
At the time of his retirement in 2009, he was the Publication Manager at NB Publishers. He lives in Betty’s Bay
